Red Tower

Kızılkule, which is a unique example of 13th century medieval Mediterranean defense structures; It was built by Alaaddin Keykubat I, the architect of the Seljuks, to builders Abu Ali Reha el Kettani from Aleppo.
Kızılkule; has attracted attention with its imposing appearance in the past as well as today and has taken place in many books. Evliya Çelebi, a 17th century traveler; He states that Alanya Castle has a strong tower with eight corners on the sea side, which took 2000 men during the siege and that the second castle guard had 40 soldiers.
Since the structure is built on a bedrock on a sloping terrain, its height is 33 m shorter in east direction and 3 m shorter in west direction. In the lower body walls, rectangular limestone was cut regularly and combined and classical column bodies were used as reused material and red bricks were used in the upper parts.
There is a four-line inscription written on behalf of Alaaddin Keykubat in the name of Alaaddin Keykubat, which is 10 m above the ground, and another inscription on the south wall. The inscription on the wall to the right of the entrance door indicates the name of the master who built the building. A total of 56 grating windows on the facades of Kızılkule; There are 22 boiling pitches and water pouring openings and 6 cherts which are arranged in order that the enemy is repulsed with boiling pitch and water and making it impossible to escape.
The Kizilkule, which has an octagonal plan, has a complex plan inside as opposed to its plain appearance. Kızılkule; ground floor, first floor, mezzanine floor, open floor and open terrace.
Contrary to the imposing appearance of the structure, it is possible to reach the ground floor through a small and unobtrusive entrance door and a narrow corridor, probably for military purposes. A vaulted corridor surrounds the octagonal elephant foot in the center. According to İbrahim Hakkı Konyalı, in the early days of the building, there were flattened wooden floors on the ground and the first floors, extending from the beginning of the corridor vault to the top cover and for the castle guards to rest and rest. The ground floor is now used as a display space.
A large water cistern was placed on the upper part of the pillar in the center of the first floor, which was reached by a high stone step ladder. The cistern, which is still in operation today, is located on the open floor.
At the bottom of the corridor, which is close to the cistern, a ventilation shaft is located in the middle of the octagonal edges. The door to the northwest of the floor, which is used today as an exhibition space, opens to the outer walls. A large ship graffiti can be seen on the right fortification wall.
The mezzanine is a narrow corridor with boiling pitch and water pouring openings.
In the middle of the open terrace, there are 16 ventilation chimneys in two rows. The light entering through these chimneys reaches up to the first floor.
